Nintendo Switch Close to Outselling PS4 with 114M in Lifetime Sales

November 28, 2022 (Investorideas.com Newswire) Besides bringing enormous profits for the Japanese gaming giant Nintendo, Switch continues climbing on the list of the most popular consoles of all time.

According to data presented by FairBettingSites.co.uk, Nintendo Switch is close to outselling PlayStation 4, with 114.3 million units in lifetime sales.

World’s Third Top-Selling Gaming Console of All Time

Following the disappointing sales of its predecessor, the Wii U, the Switch came as the new hope for Nintendo in the ongoing battle with other console giants, PlayStation and Xbox. Acting as both a portable and home console system, it soon started to grow in popularity in the gaming community.

According to Statista and VGChartz data, Nintendo sold 17.5 million Switch consoles in 2019 and hit 49.8 million units in lifetime sales. However, 2020 witnessed an influx of new fans as the entire gaming industry exploded amid the Covid-19 lockdowns. Despite production and shipment delays caused by the pandemic, Nintendo shipped over 27 million Switch consoles worldwide, with its lifetime sales rising to 77 million units that year.

By September last year, Switch’s lifetime sales jumped to 90.5 million, outselling PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and ranking as the seventh top-selling gaming console of all time.

The Switch has continued climbing the ladder in the video game hall of fame and has become the world’s third top-selling gaming console. Statistics show that between September 2021 and September 2022, almost 24 million Switch consoles have been shipped worldwide, pushing its lifetime sales to 114.3 million.

PS2 Still Tops with 158M in Lifetime Sales

Sony has dominated the gaming landscape for the past two and a half decades, with three PlayStation consoles ranked in the top five.

According to the company’s official figures, Sony has sold more than 158 million PS2 units since its launch, making it the most successful video game console of all time. Following its arrival in 2000, the PlayStation 2 was an instant hit and remained popular for a long time. Even though its successor arrived in 2006, the PS2 remained in production until 2013 as an affordable entry-level system.

The second-ranked PS4 hit 117 million units in lifetime sales, and PlayStation follows with 102.4 million, respectively.
